Catch-22 Review
I wasn’t lying. Everyone is trying to kill Yossarian. Well… not Yossarian specifically, but generally speaking, they do want him all dead.
I’m not sure if this is right, but, it might just have a little something to do with the fact that he’s fighting on America’s side during WWII. Maybe.
That might also explain why people are intent on killing the other men in his Air Force team. Come to think of it, maybe they aren’t trying to kill just Yossarian… Nah, it’s definitely just him. Totally.
Now, if you were confused reading that, you know what it’s like reading the book. Not that it’s a bad kind of confused! It’s great. You end up so confused it’s funny. The whole book is hilarious; I looked like a psycho constantly heavy-exhaling through my nose reading it (this was in my English class, whoops).
Honestly, if I had to say I’ve ever fallen in love with a character in a book, I would have to say it’s Yossarian, the main character of Catch-22. The American, but he’s not American, he’s Asyrian (but if you ask him, he’s American). He’s this broad-shouldered, idiot of a man, who’s friends with everyone but still manages to hate them and just can’t catch a break from those bloody Germans who are just defending against his invasions to their land.
He hates being in the Air Force and wants out, but there’s a catch: Catch-22. Now, to leave the Air Force, he’d have to be deemed crazy and unfit to fly. Well, check, he gets called crazy all the time! Guess he can pack his bags now, right? No. That’s the catch: He’d have to be crazy to fly the plane, since every time he does it, he’s risking his life!
As the story progresses, Yossarian watches as all of the men around him slowly turn insane and as crazy as himself.
That doesn’t mean he stops thinking about himself though, why would it?
Anyway, Catch-22 is one of the best books I’ve ever read and definitely the funniest. The characters and story are written with the utmost detail and nothing is left unanswered. This book is an 11/10 from me.
